Concert Recap: Randy Kaplan (Phoenix, Nov. 2009)

Randy_picking.jpgWhen I was putting together my recap of Doug Snyder's performance here in Phoenix a week or so ago, I realized that I'd totally skipped providing a recap of Randy Kaplan's show here back in November -- heck, I hadn't even uploaded the videos from the show. So there's little I can say about the show three months after the fact other than: 1) Kaplan's a really good live act, and 2) he played some new songs. That's right, Kaplan's got a new album coming out this spring, but even last fall he treated the Phoenix crowd to some new songs, including the one below, which, appropriately enough for the desert, featured cacti. Video: "And Mom and Kid" - They Might Be Giants

I'd been waiting for the right hook (i.e., something visual or tangible) to talk about the Rosie O'Donnell-produced documentary A Family is a Family is a Family. After all, it featured music from They Might Be Giants, Elizabeth Mitchell, Ziggy Marley, and Brady Rymer, to mention a few folks who travel in the kids music world. (And, hey, my own family's non-traditional in its own way, so, yeah, always good to see those sorts of families get some screen time.) And now it's here -- They Might Be Giants' theme song for the program "And Mom and Kid" has been posted to you tube. I like the song -- font nuts will, well, go nuts. Video: "Colonel Purple Turtle" (Live) - Rocknoceros

Rocknoceros has been prepping their next album Colonel Purple Turtle, and some of the songs are starting to make their way to a broader set of ears. Gwyneth captured the band at their sold-out Jammin' Java show this weekend, including this track, whose main melodic guitar line and title lyric will enter your brain and pretty much never leave. So watch this at your own risk. Rocknocers - "Colnel Purple Turtle" (Live) [YouTube] One other (previously) live cut recorded by Gwyneth after the jump.

Video: "Got a Little Ghost" - Caspar Babypants

Chris Ballew has very talented friends and acquaintances. First this, then this, and now he's got a third Caspar Babypants fan-made music video to share. Unlike this morning's video, this new one, for "Got a Little Ghost" off his More Please! disk, is pretty simple (hello, Billy Kelly!) but also darn cute. Video: "Superhero" - Tim and the Space Cadets

I was a little sad to hear about Tim and the Space Cadets, because the founding members, Tim Kubart and Matt Puckett, were until recently members of the awesome Jimmies. "Until recently?" What? Nooooooo!!!! Things must never change!!!! But, yes, they've parted ways with Ashley's project to form this new band, which has a new EP out, The Greatest Party Ever. While you can listen to 3 of the songs from the EP at their website, I encourage you to first watch this video, which is, like, the best kids video since, er, the last Jimmies video. A pretty good song, and an awesome video. Perhaps change is good. Tim and the Space Cadets - "Superhero" [YouTube]

Art and Commerce: Frances England and the Bisquick Blueberry Pancakes Ad

frances_england_pk2_th.jpgOne of the most winning songs off Frances England's debut disk Fascinating Creatures was "Blueberry Pancakes," whose chorus features England singing "blueberry paa-aaaaaaaan-cakes." (If you've heard it, you'll know I've transcribed that chorus accurately.) It was an obvious television ad waiting to be made, though it wasn't written with that in mind. Well, Bisquick's ad agency finally got a listen, and drafted the tune for use in a Bisquick television ad. So I asked Frances a few questions about how the TV ad came about, which she's answered below. As for the unasked question -- what does the ad look like? -- well, it's a live-action video depicting a family making, well, blueberry pancakes. Pretty simple, actually. Can't show it to you, though, as England reports that there are no internet rights associated with showing the video. (Tell you what, play 15 seconds of the song while your family makes pancakes this Saturday, and light and edit well. There you go.) Zooglobble: "Blueberry Pancakes" seemed like an obvious fit for a pancake ad from the first time I heard -- how was the initial contact made? Frances England: They contacted me. Apparently, they had already started production on the commercial when someone heard my song and they ended up kind of synchronizing their footage to the song.
