Listen To This: "All The Sounds" - Lucy Kalantari and the Jazz Cats (World Premiere!)

Big weekend for New York's Lucy Kalantari this weekend -- she's appearing on the Kidzapalooza stage at Lollapalooza today (and yesterday), which, frankly, would probably be enough to qualify anyone's weekend as "big."

But on top of that she's also releasing her new album All the Sounds today, ten songs featuring Kalantari's warm voice and a broad range of jazz styles nimbly interpreted by her backing band The Jazz Cats. (There's also a guest spot by Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, who blends in quite nicely.) The album's mostly uptempo, but the closing track, which is also the title track, is a lullaby emphasizing the album's theme of listening to the world around you and the desires inside you.

I'm happy to be offering the world premiere of "All the Sounds" -- the track, and the rest of the album, are available to the world today.

Listen To This: "Carefree" - Frances England (World Premiere!)

Everything about this album cover makes me happy and excited. Let's start with the name at upper left - Frances England! The San Francisco artist is one of Zooglobble's original favorites, and the fact that she's still making music more than a dozen years later after the tiny hand-crafted jewel of Fascinating Creatures pleases me greatly.

And then the title - yes, it's new music. Blue Skies and Sunny Days is the successor to the fabulous, Grammy-nominated Explorer of the World, and in just over a month it'll be released to the world. More music from Frances is always a good thing -- this new album is co-produced by her and Dean Jones (who's produced a number of her albums). It also features a lot of collaboration with Dan Lebowitz of the band ALO.

And finally, Lisa Congdon's cover art is so Frances-like that I wouldn't have been surprised to hear that England herself had done it. Congdon's colors (that sun!) and mix of field and town capture the organic mix that Frances' music has had from the beginning.

While the leadoff track "Carefree," a song celebrating a relaxed road trip, is perhaps a little more elaborate than the music Frances England was making a decade ago, it is instantly recognizable as one of her tracks. I'm happy to world-premiere it here!

Listen To This: "Free Bubbles" - Mista Cookie Jar (feat. Father Goose!)

Good to have Mista Cookie Jar back to offer us more kindie music from about 15 minutes in the future. This brand new track "Free Bubbles" might make you feel a little irie, thanks to two of the most positive kids musicians -- that's saying something in this genre. It's the L.A.-based MCJ himself, teaming up with his New York-based cross-country doppelganger Father Goose.

There's a little more (OK, a lot more) Auto-Tune on this track celebrating free bubbles (soap bubbles, but also more metaphorical bubbles) than Father Goose probably experiences when he plays with frequent collaborator Dan Zanes, but that's just the way that Mista Cookie Jar rolls.

Listen To This: "Cats & Dogs" - Best Coast

I know, I know record labels are (mostly) dead [waves "Hi" at Bill], but I do appreciate that Amazon Music is using some of its bazillions of dollars not just to give away free bananas but fund the creation of some kids music that probably wouldn't happen otherwise.

The latest such album is the forthcoming album Best Kids from crunchy garage pop-rockers Best Coast. The duo of singer/guitarist Bethany Consentino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno, took 11 songs, a mixture of classics like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Rainbow Connection" and originals, and gave them their own Best Coast spin. (There is, unsurprisingly, no banjo on their revved-up version of "Rainbow Connection.")

Video: "Like Father Like Son" - Like Father Like Son (World Premiere!)

I've become a little more idiosyncratic in my selections of videos to feature here on the site, which is probably partially a function of the diminished visibility of kids' music videos generally. There's so much content out there that musicians may as well just make the videos that entertain themselves.

While the duo Like Father Like Son might be new, the two musicians comprising the duo are not. Both father Lou Gallo (solo) and son Frank Gallo (in his band Rolie Polie Guacamole) have been making music for kids for a number of years, and now they've joined forces. Their new album Sun Is a Star comes out this week, and features Brady Rymer, Katie Ha Ha Ha, and Dean Jones, who also produces the album.

Not only do they share the songwriting burden on this new album, they share a love of running, which is borne out in this new video for "Like Father Like Son." While I doubt the video will "wow" anyone, I just really responded to the enjoyment the Gallos clearly share in running through various locales. Father and son are planning on running the New York City Marathon together in 2019, so perhaps it's a little preview. I really dig the gentle folk-rocker -- and their clear good-natured attitude within.

Monday Morning Smile: "Little Changes" - Frank Turner

I have Bill Childs of Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child to thank for me becoming a Frank Turner fan. It's a fanhood that stretches back maybe seven years or more, and it's provided me with a good deal of joy since then. Turner puts on a great live show, which from my perspective is a result of infectious life-affirming singalong choruses. (He also offers up a nice dose of self-deprecating humor.)

Turner's just released his latest album, Be More Kind, and while the arrangements are a little poppier than some of his past, punkier work, Turner's songwriting gifts are just as sharp. Some of the tracks on the album are more political in nature. This one, "Little Changes," is political, too, but let's call it "small 'p' political" -- nothing that an 8-year-old wouldn't understand (though they might wonder what "the Underground" is if they're not from London). And the video features Turner embracing more of that self-deprecating humor he deploys in concert, albeit with far fancier footwork here.
