KidVid Tournament 2011 Champion: Keller Williams

KidVid11_logo2lowres.jpgWell, it was a close-fought battle that went right down to the final hour, but in the end Keller Williams and his video for "Hula Hoop to Da Loop" beat out Sugar Free Allstars' video for "Cars and Trucks" to be declared KidVid Tournament 2011 champion. A tip of the cap to SFA, who beat a number of strong videos with their funky cartoon on their way to the championship and nearly pulled off the stunning upset. But it was not to be, as Williams' video took the crown. A video, I might add, which manages to retain viewers' attention with a simple concept -- Williams creates a loop (seemingly live), and a bunch of folks hula hoop their way through the rest of the video. Maybe it retains viewers' attention because of that simple concept. I would be remiss if I didn't thank once again all my fellow kids' music writers who helped with this year's tournament by hosting various components -- Saturday Morning Cereal Bowl, Out With the Kids, Ages 3 and Up!, Gooney Bird Kids, Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child, and Dadnabbit. I think we'll do this again next year. So, for the last time, here is your KidVid Tournament 2011 champion... Keller Williams - "Hula Hoop to Da Loop" [YouTube]

Interview: Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer

Cathy&Marcyw-Instruments.jpgDo family musicians have long careers because they have lots of ideas, or do they have lots of ideas because they've had long careers? While you're pondering the chicken-and-egg nature of the question, you can read this interview with Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, who might be exhibit A for consideration of the question. Over the course of more than 25 years of making music together full-time, they've got a lot of different plates spinning - albums, concerts, ukulele orchestras, creating musical curricula, and much more. Their latest endeavor is called Sing to Your Baby, a book/CD set designed to encourage parents, grandparents, and other caregiver to, er, sing to their babies. The idea that everyone should sing to and with their kids from the get-go is an important one to me, so I wanted to spend a few minutes chatting with Fink and Marxer about the project. And, as if to emphasize the duo's reach across the broad spectrum of family music, we started out chatting about one of kindie music's hot new groups, the Pop Ups, and ended by talking about living legend Ella Jenkins. Zooglobble: Good morning! Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer: Good morning... so are you looking forward to going to Kindiefest? I am. You? We don't think we're going, but if plans change, we'll try... We're excited that the Pop Ups will be playing there. As am I... It was interesting to me the first time I listened to this random CD and found out that y'all were on one of the songs. Yes, and now one of the two, Jacob Stein, his father, Michael Stein, is the male vocalist on our album. Really? [Checks his copy of the book.] Wow. Hadn't made the connection. Cathy: Yes, he was in Country Current, the Navy's country band, when I first met him in the '70s. Later he performed and wrote songs for the Dinosaur Rock series. More recently, he became a cantor out in California. OK, so I usually start out interviews by asking people what their earliest musical memories are. In this particular case, I'm wondering what memories you have of music-making and singing by your parents.

Video: "Blue Bear" - Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band (World Premiere)

OhLuckyDay.jpgI know, maybe I should wait for KidVid Tournament 2011 to end before featuring new videos. And, yeah, this video from Lucky Diaz -- his first -- is actually from his first EP, not the full-length debut Oh Lucky Day! that'll be out on May 10. But, really, watch the wonderful video for Diaz's awesome tune "Blue Bear" and tell me that it isn't worth the interruption. The animation is by Brian White and I'm kinda thinking it's a solid candidate for KidVid Tournament 2012 -- never too early to start checking out the competition. So enjoy this World Premiere video from Lucky and the gang. Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band - "Blue Bear" [YouTube]

KidVid Tournament 2011 Championship: Keller Williams vs. Sugar Free Allstars

KidVid11_logo2lowres.jpgDid it start with the brackets? Or maybe even before then with the list of my favorite videos? No, KidVid Tournament 2011 really started many months if not years ago when the two artists here today first came up with the germ of an idea for a song, then followed that up with an idea for a video. The KidVid Tournament 2011 Championship features Keller Williams and his video for "Hula Hoop to Da Loop" going up against Sugar Free Allstars and the video for "Cars and Trucks." SFA's been a giant-killer all tournament -- can they come through one more time? This is the championship matchup when fans can sometimes get a little frenzied, so just a few reminders: 1) This is for fun. There is no money, schwag, or anything except a final congratulatory post and the self-satisfaction that your favorite artist/video won an internet popularity contest. So please balance your attitude accordingly. 2) Please watch both videos -- many of you may know who you're going to vote for, but these are both excellent videos and worth your time. 3) One vote per household please. 4) All votes are due by 9 PM West Coast time tonight (Monday). Thanks, and have fun! Keller Williams - "Hula Hoop to Da Loop" [YouTube] Sugar Free Allstars - "Cars and Trucks" [YouTube]

Barbara Brousal is Back!

BBflyer_v4_lowres1.jpgIt was probably a good sign that, almost literally as I started writing this post about the first solo family show of Barbara Brousal, I got an e-mail from Brousal herself. Brousal, as many readers are no doubt aware, played guitar and sang with Dan Zanes on a number of his albums and tours. After a few years' hiatus, during which she left that band to start a family and relocate to the Boston area, she's going to play live once again. She's got a gig at the Newton Cultural Center near Boston on Saturday, May 7th at 11:00AM. You can get tickets at Brousal's website. Now, one of the best parts of Brousal's return is getting to hear her clear, strong voice on old DZAF favorites like "Malti" and "Mariposa Olé," but there will be other treats in store, Brousal revealed in a brief interview...

Big Changes Afoot in Two Kindie Bands

Jack_SPL.jpgJackieandDave.jpgIn a move that stunned many kindie music observers, late last night the popular family music bands Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players and Recess Monkey exchanged their bassists. Under the terms of the deal, Roberts' longtime bassist Jacqueline Schimmel will head west to join Recess Monkey while founding RM bassist Jack Forman will head to Chicago to join the NR4NP. Financial terms were not disclosed. Neither Schimmel nor Forman were immediately available for comment; their bandmates did not respond to press requests, either. Sources indicate to Zooglobble, however, that the primary driver in the trade was that Schimmel's contract with the NR4NP was nearing an end, and rather than have Schimmel potentially leave due to free agency, Roberts was looking to retain some rhythm section value.
