Pants! - The Alphabeticians

Artist: The Alphabeticians

Album: Pants!

Description: Maybe you don't really need to know anything else other than the title to the Portland duo's latest album is, indeed, "Pants!," and yes, that exclamation point is part of the title.  That may drive some of you away, while other families will be pulled in by the lure of that title (and exclamation point).  The choice, friends, is up to you.  (If you do want to listen to one track before you decide, I'd recommend #11 ("RainbowwobnaiR").

Cat Doorman Songbook (Sampler) - Cat Doorman

Artist: Cat Doorman (aka Julianna Bright)

Album: Cat Doorman Songbook (sampler)

Description: You can now stream most of one of 2013's most distinctive-sounding albums.  The debut kids' album from Portland, Oregon's Bright has an Etsy aesthetic and a brave emotional tone.  (And sometimes it rocks out, too.)  Listen to nine album tracks via the widget below.

Swordfish Tango - Pointed Man Band

Artist: Pointed Man Band

Album: Swordfish Tango

Description: "A combination of Tom Waits and Shel Silverstein, the Beatles and Parisian cafes, the music smells of hardwood floors and flannel and wood construction blocks.  Let's put it this way - it's an album that besides featuring a song about an invisible duck and Western Washington witches, it includes a song about dancing without pants -- in French." The Deep Woods - Red Yarn

Artist: Red Yarn

Album: The Deep Woods

Description: I liked the Portland musician/puppeteer's 21st century take on folk music that way predates the 21st century a whole bunch, so, yeah, I kinda think you and your family should give it a spin.

Worst Superpower Ever - The Doubleclicks

Artist: The Doubleclicks

Album: Worst Superpower Ever

Description:  Delightfully nerdy songs from the the guitar-and-cello sister-duo from Portland, Oregon.  Some of the songs have appeared on prior albums for adults, but this album, the duo's first for kids, will appeal to your geeky, slightly older kid.  I'd've thought this was awesome when I was 11.  I still think it's fun.

The Cat Doorman Songbook - Cat Doorman

Artist: Cat Doorman

Album: The Cat Doorman Songbook

Description: Cat Doorman is the alter ego of Portland, Oregon musician and artist Julianna Bright, and this, her debut kids music album full of DIY spunk takes this year's slot for "album most unlike any other kids album you'll hear all year."   As I said in my album review, "It's possible that if Cat Doorman Songbook didn't exist, Etsy would have had to create it."

Other Stuff - The Alphabeticians

Artist: The Alphabeticians

Album: Other Stuff

Description: It's not really an album as much as "just some random stuff that's not on an album," as the band puts it.  I particularly like "All The Letters" (appropriate for The Alphabeticians), which is actually a reworking of a fairly famous song, though it takes a little bit for that to sink in.
