"Mama" - Mista Cookie Jar and the Chocolate Chips

Mama - single cover

Artist: Mista Cookie Jar and the Chocolate Chips

Song: "Mama"

Album: Forthcoming

Description: Another jumble of styles from King Jumbler himself Mista Cookie Jar.  This midtempo bouncer is autobiographical, telling the story of how his parents emigrated from the Philippines to America, but it's primarily a love song to his mom (and, therefore, of broader interest than just to those fans of one of kindie's most interesting characters).

"The Dot Song" - Emily Dale and Peter H. Reynolds

Artist: Emily Dale

Song: "The Dot Song"

Album: N/A

Description: There is a good chance that you and/or your kids have read The Dot, a lovely little picture book from Peter H. Reynolds about creativity and in particular the importance of simply starting anywhere.  Now Los Angeles-based musician Dale has teamed up with Reynolds to pen this poppy song to accompany the book.  If you were charmed by the book, the song is a nice accompaniment.

My Cup of Tea Sampler - Heidi Swedberg and the Sukey Jump Band

Artist:  Heidi Swedberg and the Sukey Jump Band

Album:  My Cup of Tea (Sampler)

Description:  Four tracks from the upcoming Sept. 10 release, the second album from the Los Angeles-by-way-of-New Mexico (and other points in between) ukulele evangelist.  I particularly like the title track and "Johnny Martin"

Get Fruity! - Apple Brains

Artist: Apple Brains

Album: Get Fruity!

Description: Loopy and lo-fi indie-pop celebrating healthy eating.  I know, that sounds a trifle dull, but with song titles like "Water The Loveliest Beverage" and "A Mango Is a Precious Egg To Be Cherished," I think you get the idea it's not.  ("Ba-na-nas," once heard, will probably be lodged in brains for approximately 24 hours.)

Description: The acoustic version of the popular title track from his first album has a tropical vibe and nicely features CJ Pizarro's soulful voice (with backup from Ava Flava).  Also: your shoulders and head will likely move in time from side to side.
