Concert Review: The Wiggles (Phoenix, July 2009)

I promise, this'll be the last Wiggles post for awhile, but since I went to the show and wrote a review of it for the Phoenix New Times, I thought I'd at least note it -- you can read the review -- with 10% extra snark -- here.

I'll try to update this post with a few slightly grainy photos later, but for now, here's some cheap front-row cellphone footage from a drumline Anthony and Captain Feathersword performed during the show. This was kinda cool, actually...

And if you want to see the "Waltzing Matilda"/PVC acrobat thing (mentioned in the review -- not one of Anthony and Captain Feathersword's finer moments), here you go...

a fine review - though it was hard for me to get past the "cougars and guys" phrase. Glad your little one enjoyed the show, even if there are better in his past and future.

great review....

came across as very honest.....

It seems as though Anthony & Capt. Feathersword have hit their Joe Piscopo phase...

Great review. Show sounds nightmarish to me, but to each their own. I could of used at least 5% more snark.

You know they have an entire Wiggles-themed section (Wiggleworld) in the Six Flags in IL? The "Wiggles" play 5 times every day.

That's a lot of Wiggles info....

The review started out comparing Aerosmith/Wiggles,then stopped doing that for some reason, i am guessing Aerosmiths ticket prices were 20 times the Wiggles, and yet the Wiggles had production like Beyonce!.
I have a huge soft spot for the Wiggles,my kids love them, the show i saw,was adult and child friendly, and good on Blue Wiggle and Captain for trying something new, sarcastic and tired looks at the world of childrens entertainment,is so dull, and so expected, give the Wiggles credit for a brilliant show, free of Disney sugar, and leaping with energy!

Andrew,

You must be new around here... as "sarcastic and tired looks at the world of childrens entertainment" is about as far from what I actually do as could be said.

I agree that I didn't quite follow through with the comparison (though the Wiggles' ticket prices weren't 1/20th of Aerosmith's -- they were roughly equivalent) I started in the review.

But 10% extra snark for me is still pretty low snark, and I dare say you're unlikely to read a review in a mainstream media website that's as fair to the Wiggles as that one was...

Anybody know if they use any live musicians in the show (other than what you see them playing on stage), or is it all backing tapes?

A good question, Brian, one that I was wondering myself during the show. It didn't feel canned, but I wasn't sure exactly where musicians would be sitting/standing where they could see the band without being seen by the audience.

It seemed like some of the stuff like the tumbling would not lend itself to backing tapes in case something went awry.
